Kawasaki GTR 1400 Tourer
Based on the almighty ZX-14 motor and its monocoque chassis, there’s no doubt
the 1400GTR has the heart of a contender and should be ready to make a serious
impact on this class right out of the gate. Although the potent fuel injected
1352cc power-plant and 6 speed transmission of the new 1400GTR are going to
command the most attention from riders on the sporting side of the sport-touring
equation, there are a host of other high-end components incorporated into this
design. Recently announced is a variable valve timing system that alters the cam
profiles for a broader range of power. This marks the first such system on a
motorcycle, as the V-TEC fitted to the VFR800 Interceptor only shuts down two
valves of each cylinder rather than shifting to different cam timing as on
Honda’s automotive V-TEC units. And one of the more trick bits is the low
maintenance shaft-drive system that will appeal to the touring set as well. The
1400GTR utilizes an all-new Tetra-Lever Shaft drive featuring a four-link
design, which is claimed to offer the same ride quality associated with a chain
drive.
The new 1400GTR sports an entire host of high-end components, including choice
state-of-the-art goodies that will make any technophile giddy.
The riding experience is a key selling point of any bike that is designed with
transcontinental travel in mind - a statement posed more than once in the
1400GTR literature. Leading the charge is a sleek looking set of bodywork which
starts up front with a pair of large cat-eye headlamps and ram-air intake ducts
below each one. An electrically adjustable windscreen capped off the bodywork
changes and provides on-the-fly regulation of the airflow so the rider can
choose a setting of their choice. The shape of the front cowling is based on a
Super-sport philosophy of aerodynamics which directs air flow around the rider
rather than merely blocking the wind as is the case with typical windscreen
designs. The theory is great, hopefully it will pan out once it’s put to the
test in the upcoming riding season.
Another one of our favourite measuring sticks of the quality of the rider
accommodations is the amount of data offered up by the instrument panel. In
addition to the standard fare of speedo and tacho, (which we assume are analog
face) an LCD display provides odometer, dual trip meters, fuel gauge, gear
position indicator, estimated fuel mileage (and probably a few more that were
not included in the release) a clock and a tire pressure system that monitors
tire pressure through sensors in each wheel. The instrumentation utilizes a CAN
(Controller Area Network) interface to reduce the number of necessary wire
connections while increasing the amount of available data to be transmitted. An
accessory power outlet allows for easy use of various sport-touring accessories
including your fuzz-buster.
The feature we found particularly interesting is that it will be equipped with
KI-PASS (Kawasaki Intelligent Proximity Activation Start System), or “Smart” key
ignition system (similar to the system featured in the 2007
H-D lineup), a first for a bike in this class that is becoming increasingly
popular with high-end automobiles as a form of theft deterrent. Following the
lines of the bike back from the cockpit the stylized bodywork includes an
indentation in the side cowling just behind the scalloped venting that should
help keep the rider’s legs protected from the elements. Integrated hard luggage
is always a key selling point for the sport-touring set and in the case of the
1400GTR they really appear to have been well thought out during the design phase
as opposed to a mere afterthought. The scalloped panniers are lockable with a
glove box built into the fuel tank cover for additional storage of various
sundries. The rear luggage rack provides another potential location for
additional necessities.
Blistering speed … Precision handling … Touring comfort … 1400GTR Have your
cake and eat it too !
Take one ZX-14 based 1400cc fuel-injected, dual RAM AIR four cylinder engine,
add variable valve timing, shaft drive, Tetra-lever rear suspension, an
electronically adjustable windshield, superbly comfortable ergonomics and a
seamlessly integrated luggage system and what do you have? The world’s first
transcontinental supersport motorcycle. Incredible acceleration, razor sharp
handling and amazing high speed stability, all with the level of comfort you’d
expect from a purebred long distance touring motorcycle. The all new 1400GTR
from Kawasaki … who said you can’t have your cake and eat it too?
Electrically Adjustable Windshield
For an added measure of protection against windblast and turbulence, the GTR
features a supersport style windscreen specially shaped for high speed touring.
The screen’s height and angle are steplessly adjustable and it boasts minimal
distortion for superior forward vision.
Adjustable Multi-Reflector Headlights
The bright multi-reflector headlight throws a broad beam of light for
confidence-inspiring night riding and features “light-guiding lenses” at the
sides to make the bike more visible from the side. The front turn signals are
integrated into the front cowl, while the rear signals are easily visible, even
with the panniers attached. A sporty LED taillight is located high for improved
visibility from behind.
Dual RAM Air
The GTR features Kawasaki’s Ram Air System just like its high performance Ninja
siblings. Dual Ram Air ducts located on the upper cowl feed the engine a steady
flow of cool air needed for high power output. Resonators located near the
inlets reduce intake noise for quiet running.
Front & Rear ABS Braking
The 1400GTR features independent front and rear wheel ABS braking engineered to
offer the most natural feel possible – minimising the effect on the bike’s
handling and sport riding characteristics.
Full Sports Instrumentation
Sharing the same sporty, multi-function instrumentation as found on the Ninja
ZX-14, the 1400GTR features an easy-to-read black instrument panel displaying
such information as fuel gauge, odometer, trip meter, fuel consumption and tyre
pressure.
KI-PASS Keyless Ignition
KIPASS (Kawasaki’s Intelligent Proximity Activation Start System) is a master
key system that allows remote activation of the bike’s main switch. This is the
first application of an electronic authorisation system to a touring machine and
greatly enhances rider convenience as well as security, thanks to the
incorporation of an ignition immobiliser.
Variable Valve Timing
A first in the touring category, variable valve timing alters the camshaft
timing in response to rpm and throttle position. The result is high torque
output in the low and medium rpm ranges and awesome high-rpm power at the top
end. Combustion efficiency is also improved, contributing to enhanced fuel
efficiency.
Tyre Pressure Sensors
Fitted as standard equipment (an industry first), tyre pressure sensors warn the
rider of tyre pressure irregularities and allows the rider to monitor tyre
pressure while underway. When tyre pressure falls below 220 kPa, a low pressure
warning is displayed on the instrument panel. The ability to take into account
temperature changes and display values recalculated for 20°C helps prevent false
warnings when the air expands as the tyres warm up.
Tetra-Lever Suspension
The Tetra-Lever rear suspension is supported at four points on the left and
right side and mounts to Kawasaki’s unique Uni-Trak suspension system. This
system almost completely eliminates the up/down movement associated with shaft
drives during acceleration and deceleration, resulting in a very natural ride
feel.
Shaft Drive
A two-point jointed shaft is used, ensuring smooth power delivery to the road
surface, and delivering a ride quality and chassis behaviour very natural in
feel and similar to chain drive, with the added benefits of the very direct
“shaft drive feel.” .
